I want to add disk brakes to a 1998 Specialized M2 Stumpjumper but the frame is not disk compatible for rear brakes. I stumbled onto this site that sells a conversion kit.

http://www.therapycomponents.com/btmoreinfo.htm

Has anyone used this kit or know of anyone that has and how well it works?

Thanks,
Jim

i don't have any personal experience but I have seen and met two folks that had it and they were quite happy.
Theres a review that can be seen here: http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/disc_brake_system/product_20529.shtml

The man to speak to with questions or concerns is Brian Berthold at [email protected] or 765.528.2138

He's been most helpful on my float set up for my Haro..

I also have had no personal experiece with using the adaptor, but I know they (Therapy) basically invented the floating brake arm (that Kona is now using on most of their big travel bikes under the DOPE name), and I have talked to the guy on the phone last year (in a quest to convert a KIng hub from 10 mm to 12 mm thru axle). He seemd very, very intelligent, so I would guess that he has it sorted out.

The only question I have for you is this - would it be cheaper in the long run to buy a used disc compatible frame rather than the conversion kit?

I've used the A2Z disk brake adapter. It worked on my old Fisher. http://www.torontocycles.com/Product-Pages/A2ZProducts.html.

Ok. I can upgrade my current bike like this to convert to disk brakes:
Dave's Wheelset - $750
Avid BB07 Mechanical Disk brakes with levers - $200
Rock Shox Reba Race fork- $580
Brake Therapy Disk conversion kit - $150
Total $1680

OR

I came across this bike for $1600. I could sell mine on ebay for $300-$400? It probably would be 4-5 lbs lighter than what I would have upgrading.

If you've got that kind of money I would consider a new bike. Last spring I picked up a leftover Trek Remedy for $1,400.00...
