|

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right spot to post this:
The town of Newburgh Parks Dept contacted me recently because they are interested in adding some mountain bike trails to one of their parks.
Is anyone interested in helping with this project?
If so, send me an e-mail. If not, let me know of another club I should contact.
Thanx! _________________ Michael Vitti

You may want to contact George at Dark Horse Cycles, a local shop in the Newburgh area to get some support for a project in their "backyard".

Thanx!
I'll be up in the Saratoga area this weeknd for the NY State Trails Council meeting. Bringing the bike for a ride afterwards.
BTW if you guys have any issues for me to bring up with state parks or DEC...let me know and I can add it to our agenda for future meetings. These meetings are where policies regarding trail use are developed and I'm representing mountain biking interests. _________________ Michael Vitti

One of the things the NY State Trails Council does is to help NY State Parks develop policies and standards. Every trail user group is represented to make sure that all user's needs are met or at least have an opportunity to comment.
We are working on updating NY's Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP).
Most state park managers are not aware that the current SCORP exists. Our local state park manager was under the false impression that mountain bikers belong on fire roads until I showed him the page in the book below.
See page 3-35 (scroll down):
http://nysparks.state.ny.us/agency/scorp/archive/SCORP03-05.pdf
Grafton Lakes and Moreau State Parks have new single track trails for mountain bikers and Sterling Forest is under planning stages.
Get me the names of the managers for Highland and Fahnstock and I'll write them a letter on official IMBA letterhead. I just need to know what local club is going to step up to help the process along and also help with maintenance etc.
There is an IMBA Trail Care Seminar coming up soon in Hyde Park (sept 13-16) We can invite them to the land manager segment of the seminar on Th & Fr. _________________ Michael Vitti

I wonder if its forseeable that the NY/NJ Trail conference will reopen (in the case of Fahnstock) singletrack to mtb's if bikers help with the maintenance.
F-stock is a case where 1 user group excluded others from access to trails on state land, I would guess because there was/is no mtb group to speak for.
That and the unsubstantiated claim that bikes cause more trail damage than foot travel need to be addressed, in my view.
DEP lands newly opened to hiking and not biking come to (my) mind as well. _________________ Pedal, b*tches!! |

At a previous trail council meeting, the NY/NJ Trails Council made a presentation on the Highlands trail extention. It's supposed to go from Jersey to CT. It will pass through DEP lands in Ninham.
The trails council is doing all it can to ensure that the trail is for shared use. (non-motorized)
The trail will also go through Fahnstock.
They need to purchase many small parcels to make the connection.
I handed copies of the latest trail impact studies from the NPS and will be making a presentation to dispel the myth of impact by MTBers.
Check out the fourth report down:

Thats amazing, I remember your posting about the Highlands-Ninham plan.
I noticed that bikes and foot travel trail impacts are not so distinguishable ("human power"), sometimes bikes are even less so.
One difference between the groups was thought to be behavior though...
Smile @ the hikers, and friends dont let friends skid _________________ Pedal, b*tches!! |

There are a few bad apples in every group. Mountain bikers are in the same boat with politicians...we don't remember the good work done by the responsible group but sure will remember the negative aspects.
One argument was that MTBers need to control the errant behavior of others or lose their access. My argument was, in that case, do all drivers on the highways need to control speeders or lose access to the highways?
Do all the responsible fishermen need to control other fishermen from keeping the small ones?
If that's the case, hand us badges and we'll rustle up a posse!
Seriously though, we can only educate other mountain bikers on responsible trail use and hope everyone is nice to all they meet on the trail.
A smile goes a long way! _________________ Michael Vitti

Thanks for all the Info. Please keep us at Fats informed as things develop regarding new trails. The Fats members have been very good at building and maintaining new trails, and I know we can be counted on in the future for man power needs. Newburgh is not farther than many other trail systems we ride on a regular basis. And new trails are always good trails.
And if you ever git up this way, post it here. I'm sure the locals would love to show you around. |
