That's the section of trail Mohonk OK'ed and Renegades help design. Had a big work day a couple years ago to cut in some new sections.
Currently the trail is legal for bikes from the rail trail to the Larson Loop trail. There are sections that are 'no bikes' including some of the singletrack we built with Mohonk's blessing.
Rode that yesterday and it's in great shape. Be mindful of the no bike signs so as not to mess up the improving bike climate on the ridge! |

Last I heard, only the first 0.75 miles are open to biking and hiking. The trail was originally built to stop at that distance in. It was designed to provide access to some large free standing rocks that rock climbers like to practice or boulder on. It was planned to include a loop back to the trail, to make it a lolipop trail. The loop would have included an exciting switch-backed downhill section with large berms. As far as I know, that part of the loop hasn't been finished.
The trail now connects to an existing "illegal" network of trails. No doubt the various storms and high winds we've had in the last year blew the brush and logs put across the end of the trail out of the way .
The eventual goal is to acquire the land beyond the end of the trail to provide access along trails owned by the Preserve to the northern end of the Preserve. _________________ Nimium est melior! |

The only no bikes sign I saw was if you are coming south on the trail after entering from the WVRT. There is a sign directly bikes to the right at the first fork in the trail (left would lead to the recently built switchback climb). After that, no other signage. If they don't want people cycling past this, they are doing a terrible job...since it is not clear you are leaving Mohonk property and Mohonk signs appear again further down the trail. |
