What happened to some of the trails up on Mt Beacon? I know I shouldn't be the one to ask because I can rarely make trailwork days due to my work schedule and other times I'm too tired or lazy. I was riding up top on thursday and haven't been since last year, but the new trail near dozer junction (blue I think) that was started last year or the year before is no more, the trail around the reservoir is gone, I was really looking forward to riding them. I thought mtb trails up there were going to explode, and the powers that be were all for it, while simultaneously cutting down or eliminating illegal 4x4 traffic. In fact I saw and heard more 4x4's than hikers, and evidence that rock crawling was as active as ever. Has the momentum gone dead, is anyone interested anymore? I feel like a hypocrite asking but if there's still interest in developing this diamond in the rough I will honestly do a better job contributing my time. Assuming we're still given a green light I think this could easily become a top riding destination in the hudson valley, it would be awesome to see it take off. BTW the new blue trail on Illinois mt was a pleasant surprise, really challenging climbing in many spots which is good. I've yet to ride the newest trail at shaupeneak.

Beacon will never die, it just gets better. There is plenty of single track there, your just not looking hard enough. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Ok, I've ridden the trail is that climbs up from the lower reservior and meets up with the rutted out jeep trail below the tower. After you left the old casino at top where do I find that singletrack? I know the service roads, jeep roads, old ski trails, and endless atv trails, they all bore me to death. The slickrock traveling back down from the tower is fun and the hairy rock trail below that (as long as I bring pads). Is there any more singletrack or is that it?[/i]

That trail runs off of the red trail. Its on the right side and easy to go by as you can see in the video. Its right around 300ft elevation. It cuts over to the yellow trail and that is where the last single track section is. It dumps out on Pocket Rd. There are more trails that run the other way(south) but Im not familiar with those. And I think you need a DH rig on those.

The red trail is the hiking trail that runs from the casino down to the parking lot? That is one I have not been on. Sorry for all the questions. Tom Church posted a map a couple years ago (possibly on the short lived hhmtb site), after multiple extended searches damned if I can find it anywhere.

There are trails on the other side of the mt if you enter off 9d. It would be great of someone led a group ride back here though that really knows the place

You need a tour-try hitting up beacon cycles for a group ride. Last I knew the "newish" single track was "pending official approval" so I doubt you are going to get detail directions-

Maybe a trail gnome will pm some beacon beta...

Wheel and Heel's Saturday rides sometimes go there, like today. If you cant make that ride, stop by the shop for intel.

Regarding that new trail near Dozer Junction (wasnt it Orange?) maybe-hopefully TC will pick up the project again. Or someone else can take over. Those some ones who'll step up are hard to find...

It's been a while since I have been active with much of anything up there...life, work, kids, etc...

Now that I am selling my bike shop it will be taking a lot off my plate so I am planning on getting back into this.

I have spoken with Bill Bauman and some people at Parks up north. I will be meeting with a couple of people next week to go over a few things, then I am going to try to get things going again. Way less formal than last time I tried this...

Stay tuned for more info...

Tom

Hey Tom, long time no see. Sorry to hear you're selling the shop, but you can't burn the candle at both ends without getting burnt. I look forward to meeting up when I can for some rides, and yes, trail work. I'm chomping at the bit for mt beacon to take off with lots more trails. Instead of a couple singletracks and endless boring jeep roads, I'm envisioning something like a dozen or more singletracks like blue mountain. Or a couple looong epics up, down, over and all around the fishkill ridge, something that takes most of the day like the all day hiking trails up there.

I have only been to MT Beacon once but i am planning on going back this week.

the time i went, I did the fireroad climb from Pocket rd to the Reservoir, then not knowing any better, i tool the Red? trail from the Casino down to the parking lot. Way too short of a descent for that big of a climb.

I have been using the Strava Explore feature and have found there to be tons of trails that i missed while up there.

I am pumped to go back and i hope it is not overgrown/non existant.

Will review after. Let me know of any Beacon maintenance days.

Just open up Strava, go to Explore and start zooming in the Mt Beacon area. You will find all that you are looking for and then some.
