the cheap park stand, the TS-8, is really cheap. Not worth it IMO. I've had better luck with the Minoura workman. Either the Pro or the Junior. I have the junior, paid 30 for it. Everyone slams all the home truing stands for the lack of accurate dish gauges but if you're building a wheel from scratch you really need a proper separate dish gauge. Or the patience to do without it.
The Workman Junior works fine, I've built wheels on it and truing is easy to do. Even the Junior is significantly sturdier than the cheap park, which feels like it's made of alu-foil-wrapped cardboard. There are some simple things any home mechanic can do to 'tighten' up the accuracy of these home stands and once done they can produce damn good results.
Bottom line:
avoid single stanchion truing stands
make sure the stand can true a rim with the tire in place
don't trust self centering for dish
make sure the stand measure roundness as well as trueness
any stand on the market that fulfills these requirements will treat the average home mechanic right.
*this is my opinion, which has been proven in the past to be worthless* |

cool.. Thanks for all the the info.
I dont think I'll try building wheels , just keeping wheels true.
I need one that will fit 29er wheels with the tires on.
I'll look into the Minoura.
thanks. |
