Each is a time investment of nearly 2 hrs so use a new tire with hard compound squarish knobs. Go to a local hardware store like Davies and size up the screw that sticks through only 1/8 to 3/16" for trail, less for roads.
These are my benchmark pair -they arent for roads or leafy trails:

From the links:
"27" road tires to cover screw heads inside other tires"

Cut the bead out of a road tire, the carcass is the liner.

i love the idea of cannibalizing the road tires. Awesome. so the next question is i am new to the whole area and need a place to ride my sweet singlespeeded voodoo wanga ice shredding machine once we get the freeze, any suggestions or volunteer tour guides? Ill pay you with so Hogarden at the end!javascript:emoticon('Laughing')

You know, I was thinking about studded tires when I was riding JH Tuesday night. I have seen pics of screws, looks very time consuming, has any one ever considered pop rivets? If I make a set, that is how I will do it. You can even get rivets with an extra large washer end, that would help displace the force on the inner tube.

I did an experiment and used a UST tire screwed the screws in and put stans in and it held. No leaks and worked really well

Hey Mike if I come down in January you think you could possibly experiment on two sets of studded tires so we can both ride??
