I am trying to remove a set of Square taper cranks, the threads are shot.
Any success stories?
Or
Am I off to the LBS?

i heard of riding with the allen bolt out..
forest biker helped me with mine, he cut where it attached to the spindle to allow it to stretch until it would come off- he used a dremel _________________ If I can bicycle, I bicycle.

Taking it to a shop is the best approach if your not handy.
I opened up the crank along the spindle. (trying to cut open the crank to the spindle)
Careful, do not damage your frame in the BB area. (not fun)
A dremel tool with the cutting discs works well. (Mine is battery operated and wasn't recharged )
You basically want a slot cut that you can tap a cold chisel or old flat headed screwdriver into to stretch open the remaining material.
You can also drill a dotted line to remove material or use a combo of both.
Once you drive in a chisel and the material stretches the crank will come off, or can be tapped off with a mallet.(or your fists of rage)
I don't recommend this unless you are confident in your abilities. You could cause frame damage, and it's best left to the shop to do that.
I've removed two sets of cranks this way successfully. (still, not fun) |

One other thing that might work is heating the crank with a propane torch at the connecting area (square tapered spot).
This may expand the aluminum enough to loosen it and have it tapped off with a mallet.
Remember, these are suggestions only. Do so carefully and at your own risk.
I don't use the torch method (small apartment with flammable items), but it may or may not work. |

Thanks for the tips.
I thought that the bike shop might have a special tool like a gear puller or something.
If they are just gonna grind it off, I might as well give it a shot.
Its the drive side and seems like alot of meat for a Dremil to go thru though.
I'll give it a shot.

Ride around while being aggressive...they will eventually loosen right up and/or fall off immediately.
Also, you can hit the rear with a hammer and punch from the non-drive side.
I'm not quite sure the torch idea would work. The aluminum would essentially expand (greater expansion rate than steel) and clamp itself down harder on the steel axle spindle, yes?
You could get a canned air bottle and turn it upside down...spray on the spindle and give it a go.
