vassar-church trails are in great shape, bmx side is still soft, the lower typically muddy areas at vassar are very muddy. Section with the river crossing with the down tree appears to have had major flooding, trail is washed away as is part of the skinny bridge. no snow or ice

ferncliff- still fair amount of snow in some spots, other areas are fast and clear. Some major wet/ice areas.

this is a great time to check trail conditions, ride what is not damaging, and clear deadfall.

@ 909 only Fongs Way is good. The gut is still frozen, so a week at least before the ground thaws, and back to normal. 909's generally pretty muddy.

Before the riding season kicks in, its a good time to hike in and do some trail maintenance Idea Not that boots dont harm wet trails too, an Onteora pruning session next week is in the works.

Anyone have any trail maintenance suggestions?

Thanks Jamesframes and Pedaler posting conditions and for being responsible about the local trails. It is very important this time of year to be careful with trail conditions. A few too many riders can destroy trails which aren't ready. Trail damage ultimately makes us look bad as a group.

In coming weeks it would be great to see updates on all the trails which local riders frequent in order to know which trails are ready to ride.

Rode at Stewart last night, went 100ft. on one trail before turning around and sticking to the fire roads. Water water every where and not a drop to drink came to mind. Theres also a lot of snow and ice still. Even the fire roads had about an inch of mud to sink into. I wouldn't try Stewart for another two weeks.

Ninham TodayThe lot is wet like a sponge, and the trail going in at the back of the lot is soft. There's some snow piles left, but the ground is clear. All bad signs, I didnt ride.

On the firetower side I went in from across the lot, and youd need waders to cross!
Also not ready.

Unfortunately, I believe we have at least another two weeks before the ground is ready for any bike trafic. The Woodstock area still has full ground coverage in many places. Time to start riding those hills on the road. Mead Mtn, here I come! Embarassed

I checked the gravel section of the Hurley rail trail yesterday. It's still packed down with snow and ice unfortunately. The paved section is mostly clear and ready to use.

UPDATE: 3/20/08

It's the first day of spring, and I couldn't resist the temptation to ride into work.

The paved section of the Hurley Rail Trail is fine, but the gravel section is glare ice with spotty bare patches. The snow is DEEP in some places, which requires some bike-n-hike. The beaver pond before Marcott Road is completely backed up from recent beaver activity/rain/snowmelt, and the trail is submerged under 6-10" of water for at least 400'.

Fun stuff Smile

For Jockey Hill not personally but a report that I heard is that there are patches of snow that are 4-5" deep. I am guessing that with the rain that we are getting that things are going to be muddy for a little bit.

Hi,

Up here in the JH / Onteora Lake / Ferncliff area we got all snow today. Probably 4 inches or so.

Cindy.

Is that Bowling Ball titanium or scandium???? There's hardly any sag on the fork. Did BBJ ride the skinnies between the gutters?

Its an XTR (of course), balonium core. 36 tooth, tri-hole, multiple valve, 219 mm travel, biopace, adjustable spin, 3632 gram ball.
Dude, who could possibly bowl with anything else? By the way, BBJ not only can ride down curbs, bowling lanes and logs with one hand he can also execute no hands track stands.
