On Thursday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m., Scenic Hudson and The Palisades Interstate Park Commission (PIPC) will hold a community meeting at the Highland Fire Station to discuss plans for Franny Reese Preserve State Park, a new public park that will be created in the Town of Lloyd (Ulster).
This presentation will include maps of the 250-acre property that show existing trails and the best areas for views as well as natural and historic features. Anyone attending the meeting will be invited to share their ideas for how the park can best serve the community. |
Anyone planning to attend this meeting? I have never been to this park, is there potential for biking trails? Are bikes currently allowed? |

I'll be there!
I encourage everyone to come out and tell the park planners what types of trails & uses you'd like to see at this park. _________________ Chicks dig guys who do authorized trail work. |

I plan on attending the meeting about plans for Franny Reese Park. There will be an opportunity to request developing bike trails there.
There's alot of other exciting things going on with advocacy, which we hope will give us more access for biking in public lands and parks.
Several of us are off to Albany on Friday to meet with NYS DEC about the Catskill Park State Land Master Plan which is being revised.
Also, Fats in the Cats Bicycle Club has joined the New York State Trails Coalition. As part of Trails Advocacy Day on March 18, at this point I have a meeting scheduled in the State Legislative Offices with a State Senator who is a members of two committees working on the Community Trails Initiative Bill and a budget bill that would appropriate $275 million to the Environmental protection Fund which includes capacity Building Grants for not-for profit park and trail organizations.

I'll sum it up quickly before I check out for the day...

It seems like a great park, and the presentation was very informative.
The idea of FTC making a separate trail to accommodate bicycles was very well received with no opposition. The largest problem with this park is parking, which of course limits the number of users at one time.
We have a great opportunity to enrich the user experience at a local destination.
Thanks to all the bums who showed up tonight!
Keep the rubber side down,
Kevin

Thanks for the summary Kevin. There was also one other Fats member there this evening, who we hadn't met previously....Jeff A., who introduced himself to me at the conclusion. Thanks to all who were able to make it.

I've been thinking about the proposed plan for the Franny Reese park...
I think there is a major flaw in the parking plan....
Dare we openly discuss it here?

Hey Steve,
If this forum is able to come up with an improvement to a possible flaw in their plan based upon your observation, I think it's appropriate to solicit comment which in turn gets back to the folks who are developing the park. I am not sure how long the public comment period is, but I believe it goes beyond last night's meeting.

I emailed Scenic Hudson and they said they will be posting the presentation/maps from the meetings next week. I'll post a link once they are up...so everyone can take a look. |

The plan to close the current parking access at the Poughkeepsie bridge will sever access to the park from the proposed walkway over the Hudson for bicycles. As I look at it, a route would be possible to travel from the railway bridge to the Northern entrance of the park using secondary roads along the river. If this entrance is closed, cyclists will have to travel south on Route 9W or wind through the residential streets of Gregory Court to get to the proposed parking areas on Macks Lane.
Cyclists crossing the Poughkeepsie bridge would also have no more direct access to the park from the bridge.
Additionally, should this become a popular group ride destination, the proposed parking seems inadequate for the number of cars that arrive for our most popular rides. The planners assertion that the current approach is too steep for most users is not a deterrent for mountain bike access in my opinion.

I'm going to make it a point to get there in the near future and check the place out.

I missed that Steve. My understanding was to have three access points.
- Johnson-Iorio Park by the bridge
- Mack Road for general public
- Mack Rd. for ADA handicapped access
If they did plan on closing the access point by the bridge, I would certainly like to scope it out work with them to repair/reroute or somehow just keep it open. It's key to have it tie in with the access road to the Walkway Over the Hudson.

The plan is for the Johnson-Iorio Park entrance to remain open.
It is currently closed because there is construction under the bridge but as soon as that is finished, that entrance will be open again. _________________ Chicks dig guys who do authorized trail work. |
