just culled my herd... gave ss mtb to Jamie, sold ss road bike today. I cried when I got into my car to drive home. I was firm on the price, hoping he wouldn't buy it, but he did. |

I feel your pain Creseis. It's very hard to cull the herd.
Take heart knowing your trusty (perhaps a bit rusty) steed has gone on to an owner who will ride her (him) often and give her the love and attention she deserves.
Best bike herd culling experience I ever had was returning a dawes 10 speed to my friend John. He sold me the bike right after graduation from college. He needed money to pay off library fines to get his diploma. I felt guilty buying it at a very cheap price, but took it because I needed a bike and knew I would use it.
Twenty years later, when my wife complained we had too many bikes, I emailed John, and shipped it to him. I got the nicest email back from a friend I literally hadn't talked to in 10 years. He had missed that bike the whole time (was the first decent bike he bought on his own), but felt awkward asking for it back.
You never know, you may get your bike back someday. Or you may never see it again. But at least you'll know it will be ridden, when you didn't have the time to (too many other bikes, injuries, too busy at work, whatever).
And if you got serious cashish for the bike, tequila shots help dull the pain
OBL

That Giant Reign is nice! I rented one for 10 days once and had a blast with it. |

I ride an '06 Iron Horse Team Maverick (hardtail). Bought it used for $100 over the winter from a kid that wanted beer money for college. I'm slowly but surely upgrading her though...swapped out the shifters, rear derailleur, rear cassette (upgraded from 8 to 9 speed), and chain. Also swapped out the old platform pedals for clipless. The fork is still the Rock Shox Judy J1 (which I've read isn't exactly the best). It's done fairly well for the abuse I've managed to throw at it. I figure I'll ride it until it breaks (which will probably be on a trail ride 6 miles from my car) and upgrade it then. Bike is on the heavy side, but then again, I'm a big guy clocking in at 235 lbs, so not too big of a deal. |
