Fellow cyclists, please be on the lookout for a silver Honda with a broken drivers side mirror.

On wednesday 1/4, I was crossing route 299 in highland at dusk on my winter beater bike. The honda was traveling without his lights on and struck me broad side. The driver fled the scene. By some great stroke of luck I escaped serious injury, but I would very much like to return the mirror to it's owner Twisted Evil . Please email "roadrider at ahladas dot net" should you spot this car.

FYI this is a very dangerous spot. 2 pedestrians were struck along this stretch on the same day a couple of weeks ago.

Sad

We are working on a plan to make Highland more pedestrian/biker safe.

Glad you're OK! What kind of Honda? Civic, CRV, HRV, Accord, Ridgeline, Pilot, Odyssey...etc?

Sorry for the delay, I don't check here a lot. IDK the exact model of honda, I have the mirror, I removed it with my hip apparently. It does say honda on it, it is a later model with the directional light on it. I would post a pix of it, but I am inept at posting photos here. I would characterize the color a bright silver.

The exact spot was the light at North Elting (at lowes).

This section of road is straight and flat with a wide shoulder. It lulls drivers into a false sense of safety, there have been many fatalities on the 3 or 4 miles east of new paltz.

One of the things I'm planning to propose is to add painted bicycle/pedestrian lanes to the shoulders here.

I'm also going to talk to the Ulster County planner from DOT to see if they have any better suggestions as I am not an expert on what actually works.

Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to make this route safer and I will spread the word! Thanks.

Contacting them is a great idea, but know that a lot of work has already been done to study this area. The document below has a lot of details about current conditions and the rail trail extension. It also references some other studies and plans in the same area.
