Impacts of Recreation Activity on Wildlife Communities in the Adirondacks


Position: Field technician for recreation monitoring project in Adirondack Park, NY

We are seeking an experienced field technician for a project led by the Adirondack Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). WCS is a global conservation organization dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places worldwide through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature. The Adirondack Program, based in Saranac Lake NY, promotes healthy human communities and wildlife conservation in the Adirondacks through a science-based and cooperative approach to research, community involvement, and outreach. WCS has been working in the Park since 1994 to use applied science in addressing major conservation challenges such as climate change, residential development, and recreation. The technician will implement a pilot field study of aquatic recreation activity and potential disturbance to wildlife communities in Adirondack Park�one of the largest protected areas in the United States, which receives an estimated 7-10 million visitors per year. Job Description: The field technician will be responsible for coordinating and conducting field data collection and managing equipment and data. The purpose of this work is to develop and test participatory GPS methods for monitoring water-based and shoreline recreation activities and assess potential disturbance to littoral and upland habitats at lakes throughout Adirondack Park. The primary activity will be communicating with visitors to boat launches and eliciting their participation in the study. The field technician will also perform remotely-triggered camera surveys of recreation activity, coordinate with other citizen-science monitoring programs collecting complementary data, and organize the resulting data in geographic information system (GIS) and Microsoft Access databases. The position will require 12 weeks of full-time field work. Salary will be $450-525 per week, depending upon experience and availability; assistance with housing may be available.

Qualifications: Highly-qualified applicants will have experience conducting field research and be comfortable with relevant data collection and management methods, including GPS, camera trapping, and GIS data management. Excellent communication skills are required, including the ability to converse with a diversity of park visitors and coordinate with project collaborators. All applicants must have a strong work ethic, be organized, have the ability to work independently in remote locations, and be able to meet the physical requirements of the position (rising early, staying up late, and hiking across steep, uneven terrain). A valid driver�s license and good driving record are required. Preference will be given to applicants with at least a B.S. in wildlife ecology, recreation management, human dimensions of natural resources, or a related field. Applicants are responsible for travel to and from the study area. Use of personal vehicle for collecting data may be required, and mileage associated with data collection will be reimbursed. Potential field technicians must be available for at least 12 weeks during the summer field season (May 15-August 30, 2015).
