From the mailbag: "February 2015 News

Spring is almost here so not much time left for great winter riding at Stewart. Thank you to the snowmobilers for nicely packing the snow and special thanks to the snowmobiler who slowly rode on some single track trails thus firmly packing their tread mark to make a bobsled type of run for us bikers. The flow factor for us bikers riding these trails was generated by going as fast as you can and stay on the track. Veering off track will sink you into very deep soft un-rideable snow.

As you know, the Stewards of Stewart print and distribute to local bike shops the maps posted on our website. The bike shops give these maps to any rider un-familiar with trails at Stewart. There are smartphone apps that allow downloading of these maps and the application shows the location of the smartphone on the map. Maprika is but one of these apps. In addition a rider who enjoys Stewart and is into technology has posted to Google Maps a comprehensive trail map of Stewart. When you use Google Maps and call up the Stewart State Forest Map your cell phone location is clearly shown on the map. These are very handy and useful applications for those who are not intimately familiar with all the trails of Stewart. Thank you to all who made this technology so useful to users of the forest.

Time to think about all the trail maintenance projects for the 2015 year and plan a workday schedule. Remember our workday schedule is flexible and subject to change. We will try alternating our Saturday/Sunday workdays as we did last year. Of course any and all retirees are welcome to join our non-weekend, impromptu workdays.

We have some location signs to post and we are still looking for a volunteer who has the talent and space to make the signs. We have the materials and tools but our talent moved away and we also lost our workspace. Any volunteers?

Our volunteer who provides and maintains our website is buried with other priorities so we may be changing and updating our website in April or May of this year.

DECs target for completing the Great Swamp Walkway is this Spring and thus the Stewards will complete the Great Swamp Trail connecting Scofield to the walkway so stay tuned for more information.

Please email your trail maintenance and project ideas for Stewart to: [email protected].

Thank you and hope to see you on the trails real soon."
