where do you park to get to the trails at Lake Taughkanic.. however you spell that place...

You are right, it's Lake Taghkanic...
I live 1/4 mike from the rear "RV" entrance off rt 82, 2 miles south/east from the Taconic parkway. So i just leave from my house. There is a small parking lot just over the hill. trail map at parking area. There is a decent "snowmobile loop" which gets into most corners of the 2000 acres, I believe. (ton of single track potential, w/ camping, swimming, and snack shacks...)
Conditions were still too soft, sadly.
We need some warm days and cold nights. A few snowmobiles certainly helps!

Thoughts on a general winter mixed conditions tire?
I have a set of Larry that are studded.
But no snow. Certainly no ice.
I have one husker du, looking to maybe a Nate 120 on the rear? Another Husker? I ran into someone at 909 last year, they were running a Nate in a little snow and loving it.
Want to run in all wintery conditions.
Thoughts?
(I have the 29+ for the other "civil" conditions)

Been pretty happy with 120 tpi Nates on front and back, including in up to around 3 inches of snow (depends on consistency, how packed down, etc.). They seem like a good all-around fat tire, but will not solve ice, need studs for that.

Trails are good to go at taghkanic lake (did 1.5h friday and again today)
909 was also good to go on Sunday. (2.5 hours there)
Running husker du's at around 5psi

Hit lake Taghkanic this morning on my new Carver. Conditions were awesome! Like a velvet magic carpet ride.
The new ti frame has exceeded expectations. Sliding drops, bi-axle shaped down tube and a belt drive linkage!
The Sarma carbon 80's laced to i9 torch hubs are the absolute bomb!
Bike is handling, climbing and accelerating mo'betterer! (best)

I've thought about getting one of these fat bikes. I Just purchased a new road bike so my bike $ fund is a bit low right now. Maybe this fall? Really like the idea of a fat bike with a fork like the bluto. Something like a 4" travel. Might be fun. Hope the prices come down a little for what they are.

They are crazy fun. Very additive (like most bike stuff).
A lot of all season geometry,all mountain style, and parts are coming out.
The prices are still stupid high. ESP. For tires. Only a few companies surly/45 n and Vee rubber.
The big game changer for me is the new hoops I just built. The acceleration, climbing, and general riding anarchy is night and day difference over the Surly Rolling Darryls.

Because of this winter's late thaw, I have decided that my next purchase will be a fat bike. Riding the Life Fitness bike at Planet Fitness through the winter didn't keep me in riding shape either.

Has anyone seen the Framed Minnesota fat bike? There are two versions. A 1x9 for $700 and a 2x9 for $900. I also saw that Walmart sells a Mongoose now that has a 7 speed twist shifter and disc brakes for $350. Does anyone have any feedback on these or any other fat bikes under $1,000? The Trek Farley looks pretty tough, but I can't think of how to explain to my wife why I need to spend over $2,500 on a winter bike.

Also, How much is the Rockshox Bluto going for?

I believe the Bluto is going for $650. I stopped by a bike shop in pittsfield today and I asked about the specilized fat boy. They said "sold out" but they had one I could look at (fortunately for my wallet it was sold) and I really liked it. Felt much lighter than the ones I have seen in the past.

Well I couldn't wait. Just picked up a specilized Fatboy. Took a few rips around the yard and feels like its going to be fun! Off to 909 tomorrow.
