I never found studded tires, store bought or homemade to be a good choice in any other condition except for very icy conditions....like crossing frozen streams or riding on frozen swamps.

Studded tires are heavy, expensive and the studs don't grip rock well, making it slippery....and you rarely need them anyway.

I'll take a good set of knobby tires any day.
I rode a standard knobbys today no problem.
(Kenda Nevegal and a Maxxis Ignitor)

I've made and used plenty of homemade sets and still have a set of them and a storebought set in the basement gathering dust with almost no wear on them.

yeah.. there are some slick spots that'll wipe you out on the fireroads.
It's sweet in the woods though.

Did two laps of the race loop at 9:00am Trail was heavy frost lots of icicles heaves. Slooow going. Fatbike with studded tires ate it up. Wicked workout!

This morning, other than Fong's, which was perfect, unrelenting heaves on the upper trails.

As Boomking said, excellent workout.

Applied some tree-be-gone on Timbuktu with the help of Pedaler, Gordo, MtbXtc and Jimmy.

trails were looking in good winter shape for the hour loop i did today, not even too bad on the frost heaves. However, I think this report is going to turn into the snowshoe report based on the forecast of the storm about to blow in.

Snowshoe report possible only for another 3 days...depends on how much rain comes Monday, unless we get lucky enough that it gets cold enough for just snow.

Weather.com shows only 3.2 inches in last 24 hours for Pleasant Valley. True? Anyone know if it's fat-bikeable at 909 this weekend?

I'm 3 miles from 909 and have around 8 inches with wind drifting of higher and lower values. It should make for a adventurous fat bike romp! Sunday is 40 with rain...will be mud bike time again.

Sunday 1/5 8am: 8 degrees, one hiker, one dog.

About 5" of powder. Snowmobile has been on parts of the upper road buy snow not packed down so hiker's leaving lots of deep foot prints in the tracked areas.

best bet: looks really nice for cross country skiing. Hiking works as well. No need for snow shoes - unless you got them for Christmas.

Did Timbuk2 + race loop (and beaver) at 1:00 singlespeed. Very hard, snow on the trail only on beaver. Tricky ice in spots- wicked fun!

The ice is a new, manageable factor w/o studs. There's enough places where my temperature adjusted + slower speed saved my a$$. Like Getaway with a few almost unexpected ice crossings. Very little snow in Pond Gut, slightly more than above.

Ahh,I wish I made my way down into the gut. I assumed more snow!
Yes watching my speed dif. saved my arse in some spots. ESP on beaver.

Rode there tonight.. Mr. Green

great snow ride, only 1-2 inches with some frost in spots.

A few spots of solid ice hidden under the snow made for some crazy stunt riding.

The doubletrack road was solid ice with light coating of snow when we came to it...skates might have worked better.

Tommorrow's rain may wash away the snow, but some of the thick ice might take a little longer to go.

Still some serious fun to be had!
