|
|
I have a late 90s MTB and the prior owner replaced a lot of components with Shimano XT / XTR of that time frame. There is a sticker on the front gears that says "Shimano IG chain only", and the chain is an IG31. Are the SRAM PC 830/850/etc chains IG compatible? Searching the web I failed to find a definite answer, and SRAM's website doesn't give any real details on the chain or a contact info. If not, is the Shimano IG-70 the replacement for the IG-31? |

I.G. (Interactive Glide)
Some Shimano 7- and 8-speed cassettes carried the Hyperglide principle even farther, by adding ramps and contouring to both sides of the sprockets. To do this while maintaining the full thickness of the teeth, the designers had to make the sprockets thicker. Since the sprockets are thicker, the spacers must be thinner to maintain the correct spacing. Also, since the sprockets are thicker, Shimano says you shouldn't use H.G. chains on I.G. cassettes. SRAM chains are compatible with both types.
Shimano says that you shouldn't mix I.G. and non-I.G. sprockets, but if you use one I.G. spacer per I.G. sprocket, you should be all right. Some experimentation may be required for best results with a mixed setup.

You can mix the SRAM chain with the old Shimano but if the old chain is worn the cassette may be also. I'd take it to a shop, buy the parts and fix it at home. The extra you pay will cover the advice. _________________ Definition of Stinky: My gloves! |
