straight bar setup on my 'cross bike

So, I ride my 10-year old 'cross bike pretty casually around Poughkeepsie, never more than 20 miles or so at a time, often hopping up curbs and down short flights of steps. Once in a while I take it on the carriage roads at Mohonk/Minnewaska. So, I bought a straight bar and a bit longer stem for it at the swap, thinking it would make a it a little more suitable and fun for the kind of riding I do.

Now, I'm looking for mtb-style shifters and brake levers. I've got Shimano 109s, so from what I've read the LX shifters should work with my derailleurs. However, I've only got two rings in the front, and the front shifter is a 3-speed. I've read on different forums that this can be done without too much hassle. Anyone done it? Or, I was also thinking about maybe getting the Deore brake/shift lever set. Guessing that will work, too. Any opinions?

Set your front derailleur limit screw so it won't swing into the low gear, and you'll be all set to run a double with a triple shifter with no problem; easy peasy.
