I am getting back into cycling after 20 years away. I took the old bike out for a spin, 65 miles over two days, and found there is a clicking that I hear and feel in the left pedal downstroke. Broken/cracked bottom bracket? It's a Shimano Deore LX (M500). Yeah, it's old. Thanks in advance.

Since it's been a while since you've ridden, make sure the crank arm isn't loose.

After that, I would focus my attention to the pedal. Make sure it's threaded on tightly and that the bearings don't display significant play. Dismantle, if possible, and grease if necessary. If not possible, shoot some Triflo in and see if that fixes it.

Finally, if you think the bottom bracket may be loose or shot, you should be able to grab the left crank arm and visibly see the cup or the spindle moving when you rock it back and forth.

Those are some good places to start. Good luck!
