Hello! I was just directed to WesternSpirit.com where they are selling off their used rental bikes. It's $950 for a $1700 full suspension Specialized. Does anyone know about this deal? Is buying a uses bike advisable?
Thanks!

Some locals have first hand experience with those same bikes.
For me a frame warranty is make or break for most bike deals.

Those would be specialized bikes and I know my friend bought a stump jumper on ebay and he broke his bike and specialized replaced the part under warranty and he was not the original owner.

I guess it is a toss of the dice

I used to work for Western Spirit and they sell off their rental fleet each year. The bikes have been ridden for one season, which means the were actually ridden for anywhere from 15 days to maybe 40 days. The bikes are serviced at the end of each trip by a very good mechanic. My experience with the rental bikes has been excellent. In fact, I bought these bikes for both of my brothers.

As for warrenty, I think it should not be a problem. The frame is backed up by the manufactor - Specialized. I have never heard of a rental bike frame cracking. These are not super light race bikes - they are heavier frames designed to be ridden XC for a long, long time.

For 950 shipped , it seems pretty fair for a used bike.
That model does not retail for 1700 though.

I called this morning and made my reservation for one of the Specializeds. Thanks for the feedback and direction! Smile
To complicate matters (just for the fun of it) I was wondering about bikesdirect.com. they have 'good' deals on new bikes, but are they really quality? Some of the higher end ones use Fox shocks and Avid Juicy 7s, so they can't be all bad. (can they?)

You can't go wrong with your pre-owned bike.

Stay away from BikesDirect.com. Support a local shop that will back your purchase up with service.
